Strengthening Collaboration with EAVLD – Interview of the Chair

March 9, 2026 marie-claire santarosalia

As D4A continues to strengthen its links within the veterinary laboratory community, we are delighted to feature EAVLD in our newsletter.

This momentum will continue in 19-21 October 2026, when D4A will hold its Board meeting on the occasion of the EAVLD Congress — an important opportunity to reinforce dialogue between diagnostic manufacturers and veterinary laboratory professionals across Europe and beyond.

We invited the EAVLD President, Dr. Antonio Martínez-Murcia, to share a few words about EAVLD mission, current priorities, and how he sees our collaboration evolving in the future.

  • For those who may not yet be familiar with EAVLD, could you tell us a few words about the association and its mission?

I am pleased to briefly introduce the European Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (EAVLD) and its mission. EAVLD brings together professionals working in veterinary diagnostic laboratories across Europe, including public reference laboratories, research institutions and private diagnostic providers. The association aims to promote high scientific and technical standards in veterinary laboratory diagnostics, facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience, and support harmonisation of diagnostic approaches. Through scientific meetings, working groups and regular communications, EAVLD provides a platform where specialists can discuss emerging diseases, new diagnostic technologies and quality-related issues that are essential for a public “one-health” scenario. The association’s main publication is the EAVLD Newsletter, issued twice a year and composed of contributions from members and other scientists, providing updates on scientific developments and activities relevant to the veterinary diagnostic community.

  • What are EAVLD’s key priorities today, and how do they support the veterinary laboratory community?

Today, EAVLD’s priorities focus on strengthening collaboration among veterinary laboratories and supporting the continuous improvement of diagnostic capacity. In a rapidly evolving environment marked by emerging pathogens, antimicrobial resistance and increasing demands for reliable laboratory data, EAVLD plays an important role in sharing expertise and best practices. The association also supports professional development and training, encourages the adoption of innovative diagnostic methods, and promotes dialogue between laboratories, industry and regulatory stakeholders. The next EAVLD congress will take place in Athens, 19th-21st October 2026 (https://eavld2026.org/) and we are grateful for the active participation of Diagnostics for Animals in this important scientific event, which represents a key opportunity for interaction between laboratory specialists and other stakeholders in veterinary diagnostics.

  • Looking ahead, how do you see the collaboration between D4A and EAVLD evolving? What opportunities do you identify?

Looking ahead, collaboration between D4A and EAVLD offers valuable opportunities. Both organisations share the goal of strengthening veterinary diagnostic capacity and improving the availability of reliable diagnostic solutions. A key mutual benefit lies in bringing together companies involved in diagnostic development and innovation within D4A and the scientific expertise of veterinary laboratory specialists represented by EAVLD. Facilitating direct interaction between industry and laboratory scientists helps ensure that new diagnostic tools are aligned with real laboratory needs and validated in practical settings. This exchange supports innovation while promoting scientifically robust and operationally relevant diagnostic solutions. Strengthening this connection will benefit both communities and contribute to improved animal health surveillance and disease control.
