Beta-hydroxybutyric acid in milk passes through the reactive portion of the strip and is converted to acetoacetic acid (AcAc) by beta-hydroxybutyric acid dehydrogenase (BHBDH). The NADH produced from NAD reduces blue nitrotetrazolium (NTB) to purple formazan. The concentration of beta-hydroxybutyric acid in the milk can then be estimated from the color change.
